Art Opening

The girls had an art opening on Friday night. Their classes had beenw orking with an artist in residence and the resulting projects were on display. as it turned out just Chloe's class stuff was there. They only had a small portion of Alexa's class stuff there. Chloe created three prints.
The red turtle is her creation.
She also had to create some designs to represent Vermont. Her first idea was the dog with the I heart Vermont sign...
Since it is a collage a portion of him is covered by the another students.
Her other Vermont representation was this design.
I think the state should consider this one. You can see the shape of Vermont near the center. The circles (on the right) have names of different countries and continents on them and lines pull them to Vermont. The woven lines goes out the other side from Vermont leading to a peace sign and heart. She said it shows that people from all different countries combine together in Vermont to live in peace and love. Pretty deep stuff for 10 huh?

Alexa was a bit dissapointed to see her sculpture wasn't there. But she did think that since it was the Firehouse Gallery that the pole must be left over from the firemen and should be tested out.

City Hall Art Show

This year both girls had an art piece chose to display in City Hall. So last night we headed down to see the artwork and get their awards.
Alexa is standing next to her house drawing using shapes.

Chloe is standing under her still life of a rooster. Don't worry the original was a plastic one!
Here is Alexa just having gotten her certificate and headed down the shake hands with the Mayor.

Art Day

Alexa came home from her dad's house today and annouced, "I want to paint." And she did. After lunch she settled down at what I have decreed the "art table" and painted.

And painted,
and painted,
and painted.
Chloe got into the action a bit too
But mostly the office is covered in Alexa's work.

Art Day

The girls were working on an art project today.

Actually they have been working on this one for about three months now but yesterday I kicked it into high gear. Chloe asked a friend of mine who does mosaic art work if he had any left over supplies that she could work with. He happily lent her some, and she and Alexa sketched out pictures and started it. Then she stopped. They both did. And this bin of supplies sat on my floor for about three months. "It was a lot harder than I thought it would be she told me." And it was. They both had sketched really small pictures- even though I had suggested just creating a simple big design. They quickly became frustrated with the attempts to find the right shape and fit everything where they wanted it. This were set aside and all but forgotten I think until yesterday. Yesterday I stubbed my toe on the box and announced that either they were finishing these things or I was handing back the box. One way or another I was clearing it out. Well they decided to take a putty knife and scrape off (OK I did that part) the original attempts and start over with something bigger. The result was MUCH less frustration and after two days Chloe has hers all pieced together and Alexa is well on her way.
I don't know why no one listens to me about these things.

Art Show

Last night there was an automated call from the girls school announcing that my child's art work was chosen to be displayed at City Hall. There would be an awards ceremony with awards given by the mayor tonight at 5:30. Well, talk about short notice. Also... which kid? So the details were a little sketchy but I figured we would just go and see who had art there. As it turned out Chloe mentioned it to her teacher and she gathered the details for us that it was Chloe's piece that was chosen.

Here she is identifying number nine as hers.

Nice birch trees don't you think?

She got her award and shook hands with the mayor. Alexa was a bit disappointed to not get one too. She decided the mayor was a meany head that didn't like her art and that it why we all voted for a new mayor. I didn't bother to explain that I don't think the mayor had anything to do with choosing the pictures and we just moved on from that. As you can see she perked up.

Square One Art

The girl's school runs this find raiser every year that I call the suckers fundraiser. They have each child design a picture one a piece of square paper. They then sell you products with that picture on it. Chloe loves this activity. Thus each year we end up with a variety of product with think art work on it. Everything from hot plates to mouse pads to t-shirts. On Thursday she came home with her design from this year.
Is that not amazing? I haven't seen Alexa's yet, but I can tell you this year with two of them creating things that school will be making a fair amount of money off of me. Which of course is what they are counting on sucker that I am.

Arts and Crafts

Alexa selected three arts and crafts books from our trip to the library yesterday. They inspired her to begin a few projects today. We didn't have all the correct materials but were able to make it work. She started out wanting to make pin-wheels.
She uses them as a make shift fence to keep Cabbie out of her flower garden.

Not really sure how the construction paper will hold up out there, but she was happy. Chloe joined us and we moved on to alligators.

Alexa added a butterfly to her collection.

Chloe went off on her own and created a small bird. "These are the birds that sit in their mouths clean the alligators teeth." Of course you need one of those.

Don't worry she gave her sister the tutorial so she could make her alligator a teeth cleaning bird too. I think Chloe should write her own craft book.

Art Opening

Chloe had an art opening Friday, June 3 at Frog Hollow on Church Street. It would have been stunning if I had remembered my camera. Unfortunately it was after work and I didn't remember to take it with me to work so no camera. Luckily it is hanging for awhile so we got back down there this weekend WITH the camera. So here it is...

hanging right in the front of the store. An artist from Frog Hollow came to work with Chloe's class on this amazing piece. It is made of clay and mounted on wood. Chloe is responsible for the wonderful looking turtle in the middle and the painting of the leaves (the dark ones) on the tree.Pretty cool huh?

Art Arrival

A few weeks back Alexa created a picture. I scanned this picture and sent it off to my friend Jason. He has been diligently working to recreate this art piece as a mosaic for Alexa. Well, today, it arrived.

She is so excited to have it. We were looking at all the details, and I mentioned to Alexa that Jason said this piece was a real challenge for him. She said, "Aw, I should have made it easier so it wasn't so hard for him to do."

I told her I didn't think Jason minded because I made him try out some new things and learn to do more tricky things.

She smiled at me and said, "I did it! I made him smarter!" Thanks Jason. It is amazing, and she is trying to decide where she wants to hang it in her room.

Letter Work

We were at the craft store yesterday. Our task was to find something Thanksgiving related to do as a project. I was disappointed to see that there were only about five items relating to Thanksgiving and one was stickers. Apparently the world has passed right on by the holiday and cruised to Christmas. That leaves the holiday project to me so looks like the kids are making paper bag turkeys this year for decorations. In our explorations we came across these little letter cabinets on sale. They only had the letters "A" "B" and "C". What luck I only have a kid with an A and one with a C. I thought they would be the perfect things to clean up the small stuff the girls keep collecting on top of their dressers. So we took them home and the kids set to painting them.

They took the work very seriously and they turned out really cute.

The tops of the dressers look a lot neater now too!
