Alexa's Book

I am finally getting around to sorting out all the things the kids came home from school with in the last week. We looked through it when it came home and promptly left the piles until I could deal with figuring out where to put everything. I am trying to scan and post some of my favorites.
"The best thing about me is that I am smart."
"The best thing about kindergarten is reading."
"The best thing about IAA is art."
This is a double page.. "The best thing about our community is our bike path."

Hat Day

The last full week of school for the kids marks their school's annual spirit week. Today is hat day. Alexa wanted to wear my old Girl Scout Camp hat.

Well, she wanted to wear it until she saw what Chloe created to wear...

Then she wanted to make one of her own except she only decided it at bedtime. So she wore the hat she started out with... until she got to school and took it off. See a pattern here?

Concert and an Art Show

The girls had a concert at the school tonight. It was lovely. Long. But lovely.
Alexa is in the center front row.
Chloe is in the back on the left.
You can see her busting a move back there. We even got to see one of Alexa's art pieces on display.

The biggest excitement tonight though comes from the visit from the Tooth Fairy.

This one has been about three weeks worth of delicate wiggling.

Alexa's Concert

It was Alexa's turn to have a school music concert. She said she was excited but she was also nervous. In the end she did wonderfully.
See if you can spot her in the back row center. I have some videos too I hope blogger cooperates so that I can post those too.

She got the idea from a craft book.

Tea Party

Alexa had a friend over today. She couldn't wait for her to get here.

They had a tea party inside the club house.
As you can see dressing up was involved.

Alexa's Literacy Breakfast

I went to school with Alexa this morning for her Literacy Breakfast. She read to me from a lot of her books.

Her teacher has them choose a Beanie Baby stuffed animal to read to during class. Alexa chose this kitty months ago and hasn't swtiched it out yet. I think their parting at the end of the year will be sad. As you can see Kitty loves to listen to Alexa read.

The Kindergarten View

I came across a photo today which brought to mind a question every parent asks, "Which parent do they look like?" What follows are the school pictures from each of our kindergarten years. Mine being a little worse for wear.

At the very least I am feeling like I should have mixed up the hair styles a bit!

Winter Blues

It has been a rather mild winter, but I saw some signs this week that Alexa might have had enough cold weather. Not including the fact the she eats her breakfast each morning by pulling her chair right next to the heat vent and turning on the space heater to blow on her. This week her January writing journal came home.

"My family is going to Arizona."
"The sun is bright and warm."
"It is sunny in Arizona."
I think the kid might be dreaming of vacations in warm places. We had discussed a possible trip, and she seems to be voicing her opinion.

Weekend

I should have posted on Saturday. I spent several hours at the Penguin Plunge as my teammate and 21 of our 6th graders jumped in the 37 degree water. I took pictures. Like this one...
Those splashes are the kids running in... and back out very quickly!
Today we got Alexa's homework underway. I called it homework only because she is always complaining about wanting homework. I can't explain that. Anyhow her 100th day of school is Tuesday. To celebrate the teacher asked the kids to bring in 100 eatable items that fit into a zip lock bag. We choose 100 bunny crackers.

Apparently they will be have a feast to celebrate in the afternoon. Alexa counted out ten piles of ten.

All set!

We also headed to the library today. This was a sad trip as our library's children's section was damaged a few weeks back by a burst pipe. We hadn't been since. Chloe was VERY sad to find the whole chapter book section closed off. She was so looking forwadr to stocking up on new reading material. She literally had tears rolling down her face. We were able to find some things for her and she cheered up a bit.

The librarian hopes to have it open again a few more weeks. They lost a lot of books though so we know who we want to donate some money to this year.

Backpack Findings

Remember winter? I don't miss the shoveling, but really a Vermont winter with no snow... well, it is not right.

We are without any snow people to create in the backyard and must draw them. As you can see princess snow person and her kitty are walking along the sidewalk... or maybe they fly off into the air? You got me and the artist is in bed, so interpret as you wish people.

Alexa the Author

Alexa wanted to write a story when she got home from school today.

Here she is hard at work.

I scribed for her some and some she wrote on her own. Chloe help with some spelling too. She wanted to post it on here, so here you have it:

Alexa's Princess Story

I begin with a princess. She lived in a castle. Inside that castle was good. The princess loved to play and play with lots of her pets. She had lots of different pets. They were very nice and cute. She was never bored. If she got bored well who knew so I go on. She was a very happy princess. She was pretty. She loved to go outside. Her favorite animal was bunnies. Boing! Boing!

I am not actually sure it if is done yet or not as she had to stop to eat dinner.

Pooh Bear

So I missed a day. Remember my goal to post something each day... even if it was just a photo. Well I missed last night. Sorry about that. I actually went out with friends for dinner. So I will catch us up and post two today. Really I am just avoiding the pile of grading I need to do since the grading quarter closed yesterday.

Alexa and I have been reading a chapter book just for her at bedtime while Chloe gets her shower. Chloe said she didn't want to hear it, although she has joined us the last few nights and laughed rather heartily at some of the parts. We have been reading the new Winnie the Pooh book that came out in 2009.

Obviously this is not written by the original pooh author A.A. Milne. It is written by David Benedictus who writes a wonderfully humble dedication and humorous exposition at the beginning of the book as he tries to pick up more or less where A.A. Milne left off. Eeyore points out the "He'll get it wrong see if he doesn't. What does he know about donkeys?" And Benedictus admits, "Of course Eeyore is right, because I don't know; I can only guess." I liked that, and the book seems to be written with the approval of the estates of the original author and illustrator. We have enjoyed the story immensely and now Alexa wants to have a Winnie the Pooh themed birthday. She also came home with her own version of  Pooh she drew in school the other day.

Any book that makes her think about it during the day is a mark of a well enjoyed adventure.
